Finding Your Focus: How to Do Less and Accomplish More

One key to success is focus. As a surgeon coach, here’s what I have observed and here’s what I think about it.

Most surgeons are way oversubscribed. They have a hard time saying no. They continually take on more responsibilities until they are facing burnout.

Furthermore, they will often take on tasks that should and can be done by an administrative assistant, a nurse, a surgical trainee, a computer…only because they can.

What I advise: First, examine the landscape, how you spend your time, and what you do during that time. Second, decide what you are passionate about, what gives you joy, and what you need to do for your position in the following areas: clinical, research, education, and administrative. Slowly sign off, reassign, and finalize tasks that do not align with your mission as a surgeon, scientist, educator, or administrator. All, with clear communication and alliance with your division chief, chair, or supervisor.

As a result, you will find you are more productive, more fulfilled, and ultimately more valuable to your organization, your patients, your team, your trainees, your friends, and your family.

I’ll leave you with a quote: “Do whatever you do intensely.” — Robert Henri
